The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Leguin

The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Leguin

Part 1

  1. Reflection
  • George Orr, the main character in the story wakes up from a strange dream and finds accosted by medics. It’s strange because it happens that his dream come into reality. His therapist, Dr. William Haber makes him dream about various dream like turning the painting into a horse, world peace, alien invasion and etc. But in the interval of sessions Dr. Haber used George capability for his own purpose. And when George feels that Dr. Haber little dreams session are an invasion of privacy, so he gone to a lawyer named Heather Lelache. However, Dr. Haber manipulated Heather and his evil plan continues. Unfortunately, Heather and George comes in a great realization they must stop Dr. Haber plans, so George dream that Dr. Haber will be a good and kind doctor so be it, but the consequence is both Heather and George can’t remember each other.

  1. Connection
  • Dream is manipulated by your mind and it is only belong to your mind not became in reality? There are many times in my dreamed make it true, like what I’ve dreamed when I was young, that I was dreamed about my grandmother’s dying, and when the day goes by, it become true and I conclude that there are some dreams became real like what George Orr I read also from the Bible the man who can be translate the dream into reality, the man named Joseph the dreamer, he can perform miracle that he knows what is meaning of the kings dreamed, God gave him the ability to translate and analyze what is the meaning of the dream of others and turn it into reality. Dream is one way to predict our future it is also a revelation to us what happens ahead.
  • Question
  • Does it possible if George dream of war and peace could it be happened?
  • What if, George uses his power of changing his dreams into reality, into changing the world to become better?
  • If every person has this capability, where they use it? Good or bad?
  • If you are George and have that kind of power what will you do?
  • Are you like Dr. Haber are manipulator?
  • A8 dream or reality?

  1. Prediction
  • Once a quotation says “Dreams are for those who sleep and reality are for those who are awake”. For George Orr it’s both. Making your dreams into reality. When he sleep the dreams good things and when he awake it come true. He uses is ability to change the world into a better, nicer and peaceful for every mankind. His not afraid to use it because he knew that he uses it for the better. And, the story will come to its end unless the protagonist can’t meet his partner. So, George met Heather the Lawyer, they become good partners. George never dream of Heather but came into his realty.

Part 2

# 10

My favorite part of this novel that George dream make possible even other person doesn’t believe in him that he has a supernatural ability that no one can do except Mr. George. I was so amaze that every dreamed of George turn into reality. He dreamed to change the world into better place and use his ability in right way. My prediction of this novel if George continually use his ability in right and a good way, the world will change into better place and there are many people a selfish people that can use what George can and the influential person can be manipulate George in the past to fulfill their own interest over duty.

“The world is kind of in tatters after all this goes down, but soon things to get back to normal.” This quote impacted to me and gave meaning to my life. Every tatters of our decision we made and tatters of success, we just don’t lose hope for t will be turn back into normal even though isn’t look like we should be positive and do good works, because every morning theirs  a lot of chances. it is doesn’t look like if we can do nothing.

Part I

Reflection;

“A good friend should be willing to keep your company even when you’re doing things that you enjoy but maybe he doesn’t care so much about. I mean, I can’t expect to always do exactly what I like and I can’t expect that you and I will always want to do the same things.”-Roy

First and for most, having true friends is not easily to find and a treasure we must achieve and admired. Just how Colin admired Roy and how Roy loved Colin. Their friendship is like you’ve been riding a roller coaster, that have many up’s and downs and turn around. Dealing with other person you so-called friends you need to invest even if you can’t gain returns in them. Friendship is like “gambling” you’ll going to take some risk even if you’re not so sure of winning either losing. Collin sacrifices many things: himself, his hobbies and his ignorance, he sacrifices those entire things for the sake of their newly built friendship. Furthermore, Colin valued their friendship.  On the other hand, Roy also sacrifices a lot of things and takes responsibility and became the mentor of Colin. Roy molds Colin by helping him to get out from his comfort zone.

Connect:

When I was young until now, I’d also experience the same situation like Roy but I’m the other way around. But sometimes I also do have the attitude of Colin that I’m battling to expand my territory. In my circle of friend we called “BATANG BLISS” and “TAZO BOYS”; I’m the Roy Borden, the persuasive, optimistic, and comforter. I’m the one who lift them up when they struggling in their personal issues, love life and etc. I’m the one who’s there acted as their older brother and giving gently advices, lessons and motivate them to fight, endure and handle every circumstances they faced. However even I don’t like what they are doing, I’m always by their side stand firm and never let them down.

Question;

What if Colin didn’t meet Roy and Roy to Colin. What would be their situation for Colin, his still be the person who is afraid of facing circumstances in life and leave as a coward and dependent to others. And for Roy case what would be his situation if he didn’t meet Colin, his still be the boy who’s arrogant, naughty, disrespectful and full of himself.

Predict;

I think that if Roy and Colin the same characteristics towards perception in life could they make a strong bond friendship. Yes, could it be. This story speaks the reality that everybody has the right to earn friendship, no matter what your attitudes may be. A friend will always be a friend no matter want.

Character Report

No one could understand why Colin and Roy were best friends. Colin was shy; Roy was popular, Colin was nervous around girls; Roy was a ladies’ man. Colin was fascinated by Roy –and Roy was a fascinated by death. Then one day Roy asked his timid friend. “You ever killed anything?” And from that moment on, the two were bound together in a game too terrifying to imagine and too irresistible to stop. Colin was a dependable person to his friend Roy.

The Smoke Jumper by Nicholas Evans

The Smoke Jumper by Nicholas Evans

Part 1

  1. Reflection

  • “No man may earn his heart desire. Lest first he brave the smoke and fire”

A story of two best friends and the woman they both love. When a terrible mountain fire forces her to choose between them, all three lives are changed forever.  Edward falls in love with Julia, a woman who works as a rehab counselor for troubled youth. She takes kids out hiking and asks them questions like “How does that make you feel?” One of the kids, Skye, is killed during a forest fire and during the same fire; Edward is injured and becomes handicapped. Julia marries him, even though she is secretly in love with Ed’s best friend, Connor.

  1. Connection

We can’t deny the fact that in reality the situation between Julia, Ed, and Connor are happening and experiencing by many person(s). Actually I can relate much about this novel because it also happened to me. When I have to choose between the one I love, and the one who loves me. I choose the 2nd girl I’ve meet before rather than the 1st first girl that I’ve into a relationship. I’ve left my girlfriend and choose the other girl whom I’ve known and have communication in cellular phone. I was so pathetic for the sake that the 2nd woman will be mine. I realize that everything happened in this world has a purpose, and the  purpose I’ve done before to left the girl I’ve love is to put me into a better person to know the right one and to fixed first myself to be a responsible and having dignity person. Choosing for what you’ve being in yourself is can be put you into a better or worst. Choosing is the hardest thing that you can be experienced choosing between this or that, there or here, to love or to hate, to be or not to be. If you want assurance for the better result, think and think and think for many times because if you’ve decide to choose you can’t turn it back it’s either you reap the consequences or enjoy the rewards.

  • Question
  • What if they didn’t meet each other?
  • What if both guy can’t in love with one woman?
  • What if the other didn’t forego his feeling towards the woman for the sake of his friend happiness?
  • What if the girl didn’t choose between the two suitors?
  • What if Ed is not handicap, did Julia choose him?

  1. Predict
  • Julia, one of the main protagonists of the story chooses Ed out of pity and neglect Connor the one that secretly and truly love. So if the situation goes like this that Julia decided to be with Connor than Ed. Maybe Julia and Connor experiences happiness and shared the contentment of their love towards each other. Love out pity is really down to hell feeling. If I were Ed I’ll never done that, to beg somehow just to love you back. Sacrificial love is the best love that could ever someone to offer without expecting anything.

Part 2

#23

  1. The most things that I wanted to happen in the story was, Ed will banish and let Julia and Connor enjoy the blessing of happily ever after.
  2. Sacrificial love. I admire Julia for this. She has the courage to sacrifice her own happiness just to let others become happy.
  3. The surprising part and the heart breaking one is that when Julia choose to be with Ed than Connor.
  4. I admire Julia for her persistence and loyalty for her decisions. She stands for what is right and what must be right thing to do.
  5. Cowardness towards your real feeling and hiding it is maybe one of the most disturbing emotion can be feel by somehow.
  6. On Ed side, loving is not a mistake but loving the wrong person can create a chaos.
  7. Can a mistake be right?
  8. Hatred can’t heal by hatred same as mistake can’t happen again.

Worst Case by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge

  1. Reflection
  • Detective Michael Bennett, the only detective can save New York City from a terrifying and mysterious killer. The son of the one of New York most influential, powerful and well-known person in the community was been abducted or kidnapped but the kidnapper isn’t demanding for money, instead the kidnapper tried to test or quizzes his prisoner on the price other has pay for his like luxurious things and if the prisoner did not past the quizzes the consequences are fatal. Yet before Bennett can protest the FBI’s intrusion on his case, the deadly mastermind changes his routine, and his plans leads up to the most devastating demonstration that one that could bring cataclysmic ruin to every part of New York City.

  1. Connection
  • I can relate this story because I myself the one who influence my friends in to good behavior and attitude, through my life and testimony, some of my friends changed and did not going back to their old life, doing bad things such as stealing, committed illegal drugs, vices and being bad influence to children. My life like a detective to search and consolidate my friends to continue a life like Christ. Before I forgot i would like to know everyone that I’m a follower of Christ and because of Him I have courage and passion to become God’s detective to influence other people and change them to leave their old life. Like what detective Michael Bennett does that through him the New York City saved from a killer and I can imagine that being a Christ detective in the people of this world through Christ Jesus my friends will be saved and other people.

  • Question
  • Who’s the killer or the mastermind of the teenager’s abduction in New York City?
  • Did Detective Michael Bennett can solve the case without the help of others?
  • What if the killer wants money and luxurious things exchange for the lives of the teenagers?
  • Did the killer is homeless?
  • Does the killer unintentionally or intentionally do the abduction?
  • If you were the killer, what will you choose money or nothing?

  1. Prediction
  • Detective Michael Bennett is one of the best detective in the city. He solves many cases like killing, abducting and etc. Detective Bennett easily caught the kidnapper in a very easy way. Detective Michael Bennett is the New York version of detective Conan of Japan. Detective Bennett shows his extraordinary skills in solving this case regarding the abduction of the son/daughters of the riches and influential person in New York City and because of that Detective Bennett got the highest award.

Part 2

# 2 Character Profile

# 9

My feelings about the character is I was so amaze because of the rule of the detective Michael Bennett that through him the New York City saved by his enemy. become a detective is not easy job or work because doing this responsibility your life will be in trouble not only your life but also your love ones. I was so idolize detective Michael for his dignity and passion of his job. Hi do his duty over his personal interest.

Into the Outside

Reading Log in English 75 (Nature of Reading)

Cornelia Funke’s “Inkheart”

“Books have to be heavy because a whole world’s inside them.”
-Cornelia Funke, Inkheart

I have always been a fan of writers and directors who are bold enough to create a world of their own. A world not bound by the standards and limitations of the known one. Much more do I salute these people who do it skillfully and flawlessly!

Meggie lives a quiet life alone with her father, a bookbinder.
But her father has a deep secret -- he possesses an extraordinary magical
power. One cruel night, as Meggie's father reads a book called Inkheart
aloud, an evil ruler named Capricorn escapes the boundaries of fiction
and lands in their living room. Suddenly, the two are plunged into the
kind of adventure Meggie has only encountered in fiction, and they
must somehow learn to harness the magic they were reading about to
change the course of the story -- before it ruins their lives forever.

This is a summary I found in bookbrowse.com! For those of you who might not be familiar with this book, you can also go and watch the movie.

Going back, I believe that Cornelia was able to set a standard in the genre of fantastical novels.

This novel is one of those very few that can qualify as an all-time favorite. What if the characters we read in books were real? Cornelia also opens each chapter with an enigmatic quote. Also, her characterization made each character seem different, vivid, and very real. The plot was gripping and every twist and turn is completely unexpected. The climax was absolute perfection.

I can totally connect with Meggie’s dilemma in some parts of the story. She had so many questions about her parents and even about herself.

There came a time in my life when I questioned my parent’s love for me. I doubted my identity and this doubt made me a very disagreeable person. I would even lash my frustrations out at other people. But just like Meggie, I realized that it was only up to me to realize that I’m not a disappointment and a failure. I stood up and convinced myself that I am much more than what other people think I am.

Meggie’s TedTalk

Dear readers, author, and co-characters! We gather here today to commemorate the lives of everyone we value. Whether we have lost some, or gained some is not important. What we must think about is gratitude. Gratitude to the Almighty God for giving us the power to survive the dilemmas we faced. This day is solely for that!

I guess there can never be an author as good as God Himself.

He had written, is still writing, and will continue to write the story of humanity. But unlike most who tries to dictate the deeds of his characters, He let’s us drive our fate. He may be “all-seeing”, omnipotent and all-powerful, but he does not assume control over us. And for that, we must thank Him.

To everyone who had witnessed the ability that me, my father, and Darius has. Do you think this power is a curse which brought about all the misfortunes in our lives? I believe otherwise. I know that He gave us this ability to serve a greater purpose. Greater than ourselves and greater than our mistakes. And for that, I thank Him.

This day is all I ask from all of you! Let us not forget to give thanks!

A Message for the Fans!

Meggie: Hi avid readers! Thank you so much for reading the book and staying with me all throughout the story. Sorry for my mishaps though! See you soon.

Mo: Hello there. I must say that having so many people witness my clumsiness is a bit embarrassing but still, thank you so much for sticking with us. Till next time!

Dustfinger: Do not tell anyone about the secrets that I have or I will burn you! Thanks by the way.

Elinor: So, you’re a reader of the story. What do you think of me? I know, I know, I’m amazing!

Farid: Bye!

Teresa: (Sign language) Thank you! I love you!

Capricorn: Help meeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

The Great Paper Adventure

Reading Log in English 75 (Nature of Reading)

C.S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe”

Irony, I dare say, is the essence of this novel!

Having children as  the main characters of a very deep and mature plot. Being labeled as a children’s story book when it deals with very serious and symbolic figures. Ironic isn’t it?!

Even a Muslim like me reading a Christian allegory is ironic in so many levels. But don’t get it twisted! I’m not saying that this “irony” is a bad thing at all. Actually, it’s what makes C.S Lewis a master of his craft.

I guess we all know the story – the siblings (Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy) stumble into the magical wardrobe while having a game of hide and seek.  This wardrobe transports them to Narnia where the White Witch rules and has thrown the land into eternal winter.  With their help, Aslan (King of Beasts) has returned to set things straight in a battle of good against evil.

Imagine a magic wardrobe leading to a wonderful new world (of snow!) – what kid would not be amazed by this?

The story will never seize to be a great read for kids and adults alike. It brings out the hidden adventurer inside us!

When I was a kid, I would always dream of being in a faraway land where I can do all that I want. Me and my younger sister would run out of the house and act like we are the king and queen of our own land. Good times!

There’s more to this novel than just being a story book intended for young children. It’s paradoxical and allegorical at the same time.

The significance of the novel lies in the idea of how modern fantasy continues to engage with it.  Even people who dislike aspects of its influence are persistent in countering it. Even though the story’s effect is stronger for young children, its power is undeniable.

As said by my favorite quote from the book. I believe that adventures will never stop even if we vanish from existence. Adventures are forever.

“And so for a time it looked as if all the adventures were coming to and end; but that was not to be.”
― C.S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

Quotations and Questions

“And now a very curious thing happened. None of the children knew who Aslan was any more than you do; but the moment the Beaver had spoken [his name] everyone felt quite different…. At the name of Aslan each one of the children felt something jump in its inside. Edmund felt a sensation of mysterious horror. Peter felt suddenly brave and adventurous. Susan felt as if some delicious smell or some delightful strain of music had just floated by her. And Lucy got the feeling you have when you wake up in the morning and realize that it is the beginning of the holidays or the beginning of summer.”

-This quote from the novel is the perfect citation of Aslan’s mystical power. This passage also reinforces the idea that faith is intensely personal. For example, the childrens’ unique reactions to Aslan reflect their individual personalities.-

“If ever they remembered their life in this world it was as one remembers a dream.”

-It may be a short quotation, but this shows the fictionality of Narnia in the world of the siblings. The may know that Narnia is real but to think about it is just like recalling  one of your most beautiful dreams.

“Logic!” said the Professor half to himself. “Why don’t they teach logic at these schools? There are only three possibilities. Either your sister is telling lies, or she is mad, or she is telling the truth. You know she doesn’t tell lies and it is obvious that she is not mad. For the moment then and unless any further evidence turns up, we must assume that she is telling the truth.”

-This is one of my favorite parts! When Lucy told about her experience in the wardrobe an in Narnia. The professor simply lectured the kids about logic abut in the end gave an assurance that Lucy is actually telling the truth.

“People who have not been in Narnia sometimes think that a thing cannot be good and terrible at the same time”

-The narrator says this, because the children have a dual reaction to Aslan, who is a fierce and terrible lion, but good at the same time. They love him but feel awe in his presence.

Poetry for Keeps

There, the Lion stood galantly,                                                                                                       Oblivious of His own majesty.                                                                                                                The children are awed,                                                                                                                           Some can’t help but feel very flawed.

Oh pray tell me!

Tell you what, exactly?

Is He on our side?                                                                                                                                       Is He going to help us win the fight?!

No my child.                                                                                                                                                 He never sides.                                                                                                                                      But He fights only for what is just and right!

Then I will do what is right!                                                                                                                   I will go and fight by His side!

Go, dear child.                                                                                                                                     Fight and be right with all your might.
